I'd like to stress that any program that is designed to protect your computer may have potential side effects, especially if another program such as a leading security suite is already installed on your PC. They might potentially conflict with each other.

Unfortunately , the developer has a somewhat broken website when it comes to information about the product in depth and when you try to navigate to the home page you get an error saying page 404 not found.

With only one screenshot to go on, I find this hard to install and trust, reading, on the Giveaway site some people have had problems with the software. Not something I would want on my computer.

Bet you wonder why I'm up at 12am? It's what happens when you go to bed early, but wake up a few hours later! Okay totally unrelated to today's Giveaway.

Today's Giveaway from Giveaway Of The Day and YL Computing focuses on fixing the errors in your registry, defragmenting it, and more. YL Computing, the makers of a popular utility called WinUtilities has released a program called Scan My Reg 2.0

Okay, the program worked pretty fast as I had about 200+ Errors. Did not try the registry defragmentation portion of it yet since I have another software automatically manage these functions. The backup works as it says but I'm a little concerned about the publishers claim about restoring the registry incase of a system failure. How can you restore something if your computer fails? I'm assuming you can fall back to the last good known configuration from the startup troubleshooting menus or? I'm scratching my head over this one. 

When it comes to the "fastest on the market" claim , I put Win Utilities Free Edition, and its registry cleaning tool side by side with ScanMyReg and found that WinUtilities just performed slightly faster but not noticeable. 

What I don't understand, is how this is better then what YL Computing already has in WinUtilites Free Edition, perhaps the scheduling component, perhaps? I'm not too bright when it comes to comparing product features. 

Well , at least its safer then those commercials on TV that claim to make your computer faster with a quick download! (HINT , YOU KNOW WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE!)

Download the setup file, and unzip the program. If you have Windows XP or higher, you can use the automatic built in unzip feature to extract the file to your desktop. Run Android apps in Windows thanks to a Bluestacks!

A program has recently come across my attention that lets you run Android apps on Windows desktop systems. What appears to run Android in a virtual box / cloud environment, Blue Stacks lets you run almost every Android App. There is a big exception to the rule. If you have an app that is dependent on GPS Location assistance, or accelerometer functions, then the app won't work. I know this from experience because I tried to load in Buzztime's Playmaker App and it returned an error saying it was not able to log onto the server.

Bluestacks played Angry Birds and Glow Hockey 2 pretty smoothly, and it even mimics many Android functions such as the web browser. It does install a dock on the top of the desktop screen upon installation but I could not find how to get rid of this completely. The app works best on my computer in full screen to where as Window mode was really slowing my laptop down.

Keep in mind this is beta software and as such , if you don't feel comfortable with testing pre release software you should not download this program. But if you do, consider the beta warning and back up your entire computer and or sensitive data before proceeding.

Recover deleted files with Undelete 3.60 2.14 Freeware

Have you made the mistake of accidentally deleting something on your computer? I'm sure there will be many people out here to step forward. And if you take this into a store, you are taking a chance on a paid , expensive  service that is never a guarantee. But you still pay anyways per store policy.

Well, there is a simple freeware utility called Undelete 360. It works without installation.

Here are the features per the developer:

Why mobile phone security on Android phones matters!

I just read a number of alarming reports regarding the vulnerability of Android phones and your safety when it comes to using it. A phone needing an Antivirus? Well yes! Hackers are getting more and more clever to steal your personal information and if you don't happen to have the right settings on your phone to block such attacks or a security solution, you risk getting your identity stolen on your phone.

It's very important to have a mobile Android security solution on your phone, but the sad news is that not everyone knows about it or think its needed.

There are many security solutions out there for your Android phone, many of which are free. And some of them offer stolen phone location assistance for free although you might be prompted to give your email address out and create a password just to enable this protection.

I found some good ones out there but the ones that really impressed me was Lookout, and Webroot Secure Anywhere.

I tried Norton, and Avast, Norton seems to be really lacking feature wise for a free app, and Avast seems to require a root on the phone to enable some settings.

Now, they are free, as I said above, but some features may be limited. So treat your smartphone just like your computer or laptop at home and protect it, because you never know, the app you download could be the mistake you just made on your phone.

One final note. There is a setting in Android to allow installation of applications from unknown or un-trusted sources. Very rarely, for the casual phone user will you want to have this setting on. If this setting is on, then a malicous app can take advantage of this open hole turned on within your phone and could do some pretty damage. Just go into the settings of your phone and choose Applications and un-check the Unknown sources box.

I can see where this comes in useful, at least I think I do. I regularly purchase music online from Amazon.com and anything that I buy, I have to back it up to a flash drive or external hard drive so I don't lose the music but backing up ... well I'm lazy, nothing wrong with it, not ashamed! I have to go from one window to the other to hunt for the folder I just downloaded and transfer it to the flash drive. With this, I can just have the progam find the changes between whats on the hard drive, and the flash drive and only copy over the new stuff. Easy, and in fact it is. Its simple to use, and even uses the Microsoft Office style interface for its program.

There is one thing you have to do to get registered. You have to send a blank email to the email address specified in the ReadMe.txt file to get your registration code. The registration data form it opens up in the browser when you launch the setup.exe file is optional.

Again, I'm very impressed with the features of this program, its small and light and does not take up much space at all on the hard drive. I've been monitoring the comments of GOTD with the freebies, but I don't have time to compare them all or learn them. This one is simple enough. AND FOR TODAY.. ITS FREE! So we can't complain about something for free, or can we?

Freeware Puzzle Game Review : Match Gems

It is very rare that I come across a FREE puzzle game that looks just as good as the ones you buy online and order a registration code to unlock it. I'm not saying that all the games out there are created bad, but they are a little short and could use some more action , graphics, gameplay, etc.

Match Gems is a match 3 game with a twist. You have the top jewels to worry about while you have a set of three to shoot up to the top. But you must strategically eliminate 3 or more of the same time and they must connect in order to eliminate them. That's about this game in short - The graphics are pretty good for a puzzle game and the music is decent. HOWEVER... The game opens up the developers page upon the game exiting. All its a advert for is the developers website. I'm assuming Freeware Files , the place I downloaded the game from does not consider this Ad-Ware or hijacking.

I'm assuming this game was originally given away as a plug to upsell their website and the games they develop and sell on various websites. However I've scanned the file with Virus Total and did not see anything malicious out of the ordinary.

What's up with the variations out there of CD Burning software? What makes one software better then the other? I seriously don't know. Naturally if one software fails me at the tasks I'm trying to accomplish I use another. I've heard of WinISO before but never used the program because I simply could not afford it. Today my luck has changed? Yes it has.

A license for the full version costs $29.95 which you get updates, but I'm sorry. Until they make this fully compliant with 64bit, I won't buy it. If you need to mount images, Daemon Tools Lite, seems to work on Windows 7 64 bit.

If you have 32 bit machine ? No problem for you then. But a majority of Windows 7 computers sold now are 64 bit by design.

My opinion: Many commercial software programs out on the market make you pay for MP4 format conversion, my guess is the licensing costs associated with the format.. I guess this allows you to take your videos, perhaps from Youtube and then convert them into audio files which can be put on your portable device.

Giveaway Of The Day for March 21st 2012 : PowerCmd (Experts Only)

Today's software comes with an experts only reccomendation because the software would not find its everyday use in a casual computing environment. It's meant for experts that work with expert commands inside a generic interface with long sets of commands and codes from the DOS days. Unfortunately, the only thing I use the regular command prompt now and then is for NetStat and IpConfig commands where I need to troubleshoot now and then. I don't see myself using the command prompt any other way. So why would an "expert " need this software. Checkout what the developer has to say :

I may be an expert in some areas of computing but I've not learned this one yet. I can't try it because the Giveaway page does not list Windows 7 as a compatible operating system. I did learn MS-DOS back in the day when I was a 10 year old boy as my first computer was a Packard Bell and I learned DOS commands all by myself. Call me a self miracle teacher I suppose. But I learned how to install Windows 3.1 and DOS all by myself.

DOS Games? Well that's another story alltogether and I use DosBox for that (a review another day)

Since I don't understand the proper concept of this program, I can't rate it nor test it , and or say if its good or not. All I can say if you need this kind of program, please go for it and let me know its true use for what its like. I can't understand it from the description or barely.

Giveaway of The Day for 3/20/12 : Acropano Photo Stitcher

Yes I'm sure there are a lot of photography fanatics out there. A lot of you with fancy cameras! :) What do you do with them? You use them to their full potential to create beautiful long banner style panoramic images. So how do you stitch them together?

Acropano Photo Stitcher claims it can do this task. But at a $99 price tag?  I'm not so sure about this price tag, I mean, what about alternatives out there to it?

It offers features such as Horizontal Stitch , 360 View Stitch, and Vertical Stitch. Sounds simple ? Well maybe.

So their description :

AcroPano Photo Stitcher 2.1.3 stitches your photos into dazzling panorama automatically and perfectly, at the same time provides full manual control, you can fully control over the final result.

*Intelligent photo organizing:

*Automatically organizes associated photos in the right order.

*Automatic photo stitching.

*Supported output formats and sizes: JPEG (JPG), BMP, TIFF (TIF), PNG or TGA format with different image quality.

*Multiple Stitching Mode: Horizontal Panorama; 360° Panorama; Vertical Panorama.

That would be good if I owned a camera to use the software but unfortunately I don't. I just installed it to play around with the sample file. 

The program did crash a couple of times complaining about out of memory errors, not something I would want to trust my favorite images to if this happened often. Also, the developers logo closely mimics that of Google Chromes icon color scheme, a questionable product icon that Google may question and perhaps might go after for trademark infringement? I highly doubt this over a color scheme being used the same. But Google does have Panaramio which may bear remote resemblance to AcroPano. 

The program is registered with a registration key, and you have to use an email address to register. I don't think the program cares what email you use, as I used my gmail address email. However its unknown if the program can detect dummy emails and not work. 

I really cannot reccomend this software for $99 as its too high in price, and prone to errors in my testing.  If the developer could explain why its program is worth the price tag its offering it at and compare it to the paid  alternatives out on the market, I really would be compelled to make the purchase. But this falls short. Interface is not everything full functionality is what it is.

Giveaway Review : Folder Scout Standard Edition 1.3.1

There are plenty of times we download something, or create a document but don't remember the name of it. I've done this too many times to keep track of, let alone why I created , or downloaded something in the first place. I will always use the search function in Windows 7 to see the names in files, but even with 2GB of ram and the speed of my computer, this always is not a speedy thing to search for a file.

Lots of competition out there, Google Desktop Search, to name one, there are other ones out there from the big companies too but in my experience, they are always BLOATED. Search toolbars just to be able to install something, big file sizes and the list goes on and on and on. I wish there was a way someone could do it right, make the file size a bit smaller then the competitors out there.

Folder Scout seems to try and accomplish this task and with speed too. I indexed the folders and within 30 seconds it was done. Searchable files and folders. This is pretty much it what the program does is search for your files speedier then (insert your brand name car here)

I took a look at the developers website to see why it would compel me to buy this program and purchase a license of it. I'm grateful to Giveaway Of The Day for giving it away but what in the event I lose this program, I'll have to purchase a retail copy.

I'm assuming the developer is right since you initially have to build up a list first before you can scan for files. I actually like doing this as opposed to Windows constantly making my hard drive go just to index every new file that comes on the computer, and you may run into performance issues as a result of the indexing service.

$19.99 seems fair to an extent for a program of this variety, considering its speedy nature and low file size (under 10mb after installtion) But $29.95 for network features and the only new ability to auto index seems a bit crazy. But then again, it takes a lot of work to code something so quick , yet keep the file size down.

Want to use the computer without being at the computer? That's the first thing that struck me when viewing this software I don't normally have a use for this kind of software but I do know of some people out there who need things done at their computer but they are too busy to manually execute the program for it to start up. In all reality this program can do this , schedule and automate tasks such as program launching, shutdown and so forth.

It also syncs your clock too.

I suppose there is a market out there for this kind of software but I always like to be in control of what I do, and sometimes software is not perfect and something may happen by accident in an automated situation. Hard to tell however if the developers software caused it , or Windows simply had its moment.
